It isn’t hyperbole: Journalists today have access to more data than ever before. But exposing the stories buried in the numbers remains a challenge. From election results, budgets and census reports to Facebook updates and image uploads, journalists need to know how to find the important trends in data and shape them into compelling narratives. Learning to use spreadsheets effectively is the first essential step in working with data.
By the end of this course, you should know how to:
- Import data into spreadsheets
- Edit data for clean and clearly formatted spreadsheets
- Explore trends in data using sorting, functions, and conditional formatting
- Summarize and filter data with Pivot Tables
- Understand normalization, percent change, means and medians
- Write about numbers accurately and responsibly
